My dearest hometown, Purwokerto…

Hi there! My name is Metta. I was born in 1998 in a small town named Purwokerto.

Purwokerto is a small town in central Java Indonesia. It is well known for its traditional foods like kripik, nopia and mendoan. Purwokerto is the capital of Banyumas region (Sometimes I call it ‘Water Golden city’). The estimated population of the town in 2009 was about 350.705.
Purwokerto is located at the ‘foot’ of Mount Slamet, the most sacred volcano in Java (according to my school’s security or ‘Satpam’, Pak Syahri)
Purwokerto’s central town square or ‘alun-alun’ is in the center of the town where some of the citizen of the town spend their free time. Many hawkers and vendors sell local foods, toys and vcds. Next to the square is the regional government office or kantor Kabupaten with Pendopo ‘Si Panji’ among the buildings.

A tourist destination not far from Purwokerto is Baturraden. It is located about 15 km northward of the city. Baturraden is a classical highland area at the foot of Mount Slamet. Baturraden is a popular site for local tourism. There are two natural sulphuric hot springs in Baturraden, namely ‘Pancuran Telu’ and ‘Pancuran Pitu’. There are also some hotels ,villas and bungalows in Baturraden.
As I have mentioned earlier, Purwokerto is wellknown for its local foods, like kripik (‘tempe’ covered in wheat flour dough and deep fried), nopia , and many different kinds of chips and crackers like ‘marning’, ‘sukro’ and ‘lanthing’. Gethuk goreng, mendhoan, soto and srabi are some other delicacies in the area.
 Soto Sokaraja

There are two kinds or styles of soto in Purwokerto. The first one is soto Sokaraja (small town eastward of Purwokerto). The second one is Soto Purwokerto. Soto Purwokerto is a little bit different from soto Sokaraja in the ingredients. But both are different from other sotos in Indonesia, because they are mixed with spicy peanut sauce .

There are many things to learn and enjoy in my hometown Purwokerto but I think they are enough for now… ^^
